“Native Hosts” by Edgar Heap of Birds

Pitzer College’s Art+Environment program kicked off its inaugural year with a public art installation by Edgar Heap of Birds, the program’s first artist-in-residence and an internationally-recognized contemporary artist. The installation, Native Hosts, will be on display in various locations across Pitzer’s campus. Native Hosts honors the Tongva, indigenous people whose ancestral homelands lie in the Los Angeles area. Created with local Tongva elder, Julia Bogany,  Native Hostsfeatures signs displaying the names of traditional villages and sacred sites.

Pitzer Elder-in-Residence, Julia Bogany explains the story behind the Grandmother Mural by Artist Joe Galarza

Located outside of Scott Hall on Pitzer Campus – the Grandmother mural by artist Joe Galarza honoring Tongva culture was conceived in collaboration with Elder Julia Bogany and is utilized as a storytelling tool with Pitzer students.

The Pomona College Museum Native American Collection

Many of the artifacts in Pomona’s collection were acquired by collectors at the turn of the last century, when increased interest in Native American cultures was propelling new archaeological and anthropological studies, as well as substantial acquisitions of artifacts by museums and private collectors.
